I have actually seen this technology used in Wuhan, China. Yup, you heard me right, China. It is something very similar whereby you will have to click on a key pad to retrieve you car. It would be useful for countries who have no space at all such as Japan, Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan etc.
If you read the report it only fit 43 extra car in the apartment mentioned (originally 24 parking, now it would accommodate 67cars). It is actually not bad already, it is a 180% increase in parking space. But parking rate is way expensive, USD25/day, this will only catch trend in developed countries where living cost is already high.
Anyhow, space is getting more limited in populated area and it will not get better, only worst. Therefore, there will definitely be time when this thing become a hit and it will become cheap once it hit an economy of scale for their production.
