This is the saddest part of buying a Proton. Although we know they are made of the cheapest quality available, we still have to buy them because they are cheaper compare to foreign cars, but the suckiest! After 5 years getting this car, it is almost time to change this old piece of junk, I think. Need to start collecting money for this, but buying is a LIABILITY! I am trying to last as long as possible with this junk. I think a Nissan Sunny from the 80s can do better than my car.
Look at my Proton Waja. Now you see it!

Now you don’t!

My Proton Waja parts that needs to be fixed:-
- Inside Door Sensor Light. Broke on year 4.
- Digital Clock Bulb (which is hard to fix as the whole dashboard needs to be down). Broke on year 4.
- Right Signal Bulb (I tried to ask mechanic to fix this, there is no problem with the bulb, just that wiring is a problem). If this is broken, the right signal blinks a lot faster compare to the left signal. Broke on year 2.
- CD Player – Can’t read CD at all, I guess this is why they provide me 6 disc changer, knowing that the CD player will die very soon. I think this died on year 3½.
- LATEST Error – I am having some sign error on my dashboard? The handbrake light and abs light will light up (sometimes), but handbrake is definitely down. Weird Weird.
- LATEST – Door Handle (must be fix immediately). Broke almost every year/other year.
Paint and Fix Dent – This may not be a Problem caused by Proton, but this was caused by this guy. Also I could paint the door handle which was change previously to dark Grey rather than black.- FIXED Window Problem – Proton Waja infamous Window winding problem is away for almost 2 years already. Cross my fingers that it will not be back anytime soon. (this problem is inherited from Proton Wira which is around 10 years technology already). They never had the intention to fix them.
How to get into my car now?
Currently, I will start with the back door (right side). Trying to squeeze my head over to the front seat and reach for the door handle inside my car. At the same time, another hand will be trying to stop the door from closing again.
Don’t worry, will get it fix on first thing tomorrow.
Now, I think I need you guys to give me your experience regarding this, how often does your door handle brakes? After 10 years? 5 years once? or like mine (I think is 3 times in 5 years). Leave your comments with the car model and year that your drives. It is hard to do a poll as I would like to know what car people drives, with years and then their problem.

Bought my proton wira in 1994 & until now its still going strong. No problems. A good car, worth my investment & at that period of time it only cost RM 32,000.00. Never think of selling it,coz its worth around RM 9,000.00 now & since its so faithfull to me,will keep it for another 10 years.
Probably U are just unlucky, but thats not an excuse to give it away !!
cheers.
You can try and spray some lubricant at the sides of the window – both front and back that’s in contact with the rubber.
works for my proton wira (I think >5 years of age).
Spray once and problem gone.
ali allah ditta : I don’t think so. If you see any waja with a black door handle. It means they have change them and had not spray them. You will find quite a lot of them. Or Proton just make car worser and worser.
Dwayne Foong : I think you meant the window problem, I think it is call the bracket holding the window. It is made of plastic, that is why it breaks.
8dee, is your power window broken and can’t wind up at all?
If it winds up and jam half-way (other people will use 1 hand to push it up), you can use the method i suggested above.
Dwayne Foong: currently it is okay…but I used to have problem and cross my fingers that it will not repeat itself. My problem is actually the window bracket breaking, causing the window to just drop down all the way.
yup, my friends cars door also have the same problem, he is using SAGA
This is what I am trying to say. They are having this problem since Saga…what 1985? Now after 21 year, same old problem. A 21 year old are much better off, why can’t the people inside proton do the same? GROW!
This happened to me once. But it was deliberate. Someone messed up my car pretty bad. They broke off all the handles and keyed the sides and busted my tires. They were mad because I parked in their parking space. Someone needs therapy. Anyway, the car was locked when they broke off the handles so it was really hard to get in! Finally I got in and I had to leave it unlocked till I could replace all the handles. It sucked.
it is sad to hear that someone actually does that.
Yours are consider good.
I don’t even want to start listing down mine . “
YenJai: Wah….still consider good? You should start listing them so that everyone knows and hopefully they will listen to our problem and be better in the future cars
It could be worse. You could own a hyundai
I can’t imagine Hyundai can get worst compare to Proton…maybe you could give us some idea
Proton sucks, ’nuff said!
my wira’s clock sucx!!! i’ve knock more than 10 time every morning. it suddenly disappear… plus all plastic in my wira getting easy to crack.. lowssiii oneeeee wiraa….. that how proton growth well by ages, they sell same model every century, even iswara they claim to be most problem also they still sell it now…then because they sell same car so they can product same part every year… and you will buy it and buy proton because they part can be buy in any places… damn proton!…
Hi,
i’m one of proton car owner (gen 2), bought it since 2004 and until now still good and got no “problem” at all. just some silly problem happend sometimes on the accessories part like urs, WHAT i do? just fix it laaa then it will be ok. unless u r too harsh with your car, thats why problems are always there. And i’m just wondering why are u guys keep complaining abt proton cars? its going to be the same for other car too..problem on door, rear light, power windows, alarm, and sometimes even worst than proton car….So it is just a matter of lucky and unlucky lorr. in your case i think u r just unlucky to have that proton Waja. buy new car then everything solve. hehe.
ah yie: complain, have you see my blog posting?. I do fix my car when something is spoil, but the question is
“If you buy a japanese car (honda civic), will you get this problem after using it for 5 years? Or you will face more problem with a honda civic? ”
I know the answer and I believe you will know that too.
Why compare honda civic? this is because without proton, we will buy honda civic at the same price we are paying for waja (maybe even cheaper) due to country protection of local cars. (Check honda price list in USD http://autos.yahoo.com/honda/).
I am not complaining if they just started making the car for 5 or 10 years. It is 20 years, Proton should be earning big money because they have been selling inferior cars for the price of a good car in the market. Have they earned enough?
yup… better than others right? but based on my surveyed… commonly proton will begun it problem since it first year use… great right?
rizal: I think normally it comes after the 4th year. Which is pretty bad if you car life is only 4 years.
just go to spare part shop to buy ‘cap ayam’ painted door handle, pass it to mechanics when you r doing your next service and fix it. I dont agree that buying a new car will solve all the problem, as every cars got its own problem
muscaa: I think there is certain car out there which provide better parts. Ever seen any other car has broken door handle? I doubt it under normal use condition. How about broken 3 door handle in 4 years of normal usage?
Buying any other car will definitely solve this problem for sure i know.
WHY ARE YOU GUYS HAVING PROTON CARS?!?!
i mean come on guys, who here can honestly say they are even worth a thousand ringgit?
the malaysian government seen as a holy and divine messiah by malaysians are completely disregarding the AFTA treaty, and i’m sure you guys know why, but are probably too arrogant or foolish to admit it, and still think proton is competitive. hahaha competitve! the existence of proton has bled malaysia billons (of worthless horribly inflated ringgit anyway, so that isnt too bad). Malaysia should have the balls to finally admit it is good at nothing other than crude oil(which it isnt good at but just that the country has been blessed with it, which ALAS, means the country isnt good at anything!). come on malaysians, its time to pull up your socks. do look to us singaporeans for a sense of future direction!
Proton cars are disgrace….my brother’s proton saga broke down during his first ride…unbelievable…
Darren: I am sad to hear that it actually broke down the first day..i had my own problem too…my door just gave up on me yesterday…will be going to the mechanics again this weekend…plus i just went to mechanics last saturday to do my servicing and fix my air con belt…somehow aircon belt still making noise…and addational problem..
Hi there…
I understand what u r trying to say.Because i too own a proton waja too.
So for your info,u can always try to open your car hander bar always at the right side of it because that is the part that support the bar.If u don’t believe me that u try to feel it when u try to open it.

I own a 2004 Waja with the so called “Enhanced” spec. This car sux big time! Here are my list of problems:
Power window – 3 times repair, all on driver side.
Starter – Die out with only 20,000 km on the odometer.
Just a week before the starter dies, my clutch springs broke off – need to replace the whole clutch. This is unimaginable as my car was practically new at that time (Odometer reading around 20,000 km). EON refused to replace it on warranty as clucth is not covered in their warranty.
Interior light switch – replaced under warranty
Hazard light switch – replaced under warranty
Now my car clocked more than 80,000 km. New problems arised
Clicking noise whenever I turn the wheel. My mechanic “pecah kepala” trying to find the source of the problem. Unsolved till now.
Steering bush pecah already. Will change it ASAP
Starter is on the way out – again.
I never skip servicing this car. For 2 years under warranty, I only service my car at EON service centre. After my warranty expired, I sent it to non-EON service centre, however, I faithfully followed the recommended services prescribed in the service booklet. Yet still this car gave me tonnes of problems.
really pity on you… you know. if government dont put high tax on car. probably proton no more. not because we do not support malaysian product but they only put the quantity as first priority, second design, quality is lasttttt… my friend owned nissan sunny (i think < 1990) until now never had any minor or major problem. Even now they said proton price will drop due on oil problem (of stuppppid pak lah!!) but only drop 2-3 hundreds..

I have two Protons at home .. a wira and a Gen2. Gen2 is my own .. basically that car .. dont get me started…. makes a sound when i turn the steering wheel full ( according to Proton mechanics: mmg macam itu ). Power window failure ( Classic Proton ) .. now the car .. i am not sure the disc brake is making such a racket when i drive .. i am so embarrassed. Age of the damn car: 2 years old. I drive it only within the city. Maybe the most is an hour per day. And one look at the interior inside, paying 60k+ for a plastic interior car .. that’s the best i can afford at the time i bought it… my next car, WONT be a Proton … even Perodua rocks … Why foreign car more expensive … because the government knows that if they dont heavily tax the imported cars, Proton would be closed down faster than you can blink your eye. Proton: 2 Decades of Failures and copycat designs and sucks the money of the local malaysian for lousy car
honda is good as what i heard but how many malaysian afford to buy it.
my friend just brought hondy city last year cost about RM 110k paying abount rm1.5k permonth loan 9 years. his salary only rm2.5. half salary for his honda. now he is suffering for that car. just because proton is suck! even u buy perdana v6. you will find same stupid typical proton problem.
what da proton. they never learn!
hi bro, i would like to know how much did u paid for fixing the “car handle” & to fix the “window winding”?
my poor waja is having the problems now…
just want to know the repairing cost b 4 i send my waja to workshop… sign…
hi….I fixed it quite a while ago…this was posted on 2007 feb…i think it is not very expensive…but it is fixed in klang….should be around 30 – 40 buck for a painted door handle..then workmanship is around 20….so total is rm60….window is never good news….bracket is around 230+ if motor..then will cost rm300 to 400….remember this is not going to proton official workshop…it will defnitely cost more there
hello 8dee,
thanks for the info…
will look around for cheapest price…
What is proton? Some kind of chocolate brand?
Well, i think proton is a fragile cars. Bought a satria at the end of 2007, There are lot of problems that i encounter such as Window problem(change motor 2 times, still freaking broke), standard alarm problem, water pump problem, door handle problem, lock problem, right arm problem, engine overhaul last month but still got problem, and many more. when i get to buy a new car soon, i will just dump my proton in the halfcut. I’m so sure nobody will buy my proton. Do you?
I’m now driving a perdana v6,fomerly was driven by my father.. He bought the car, first hand in 2004. after 5 years the car has no problem at all. The car has high mileage due to frequent use (a sacrifice car, cause it’s a proton). Still no major problem. Everything is functioning well..
My sister is driving a 13 year old WIRA, bought in 1996, formerly driven by my mother, also, no mechanical problem halting the car.My family has been keeping the car due to sentimental value.
So i guess, regular inspection of the car, and how rough you treat your car is the determinant affecting the problem occurring towards the car.
Proton Edar produce a superd rubbish car and be careful because they are exactly doing the faker business. Some of their dealer received all the downpayment of customers but not supply the cars. Finally the dealer run away and bankrupt but Proton edar even not to take responsibility because of their stupid mistake appointment of fake-dealers.
Most accident die in Malaysia is because of the rubbish car (steel is not hard enough because cut cost), if you appreciated your life buy another car.
no matter how much you complaining on PROTON they still selling old piece of junk.. fragile car.. auto breakable car… plastic engine…
this is because government strictly protect proton by triple up import car tax so proton will be be what they say “merempat di negera sendiri”.
i just heard somewhere in our state’s DUN brought 5 – 10 BMW that cause ‘kecoh satu malaysia’. their reason, they dont wnt to use national car because it was very2 high maintenance and always ‘rosak’. nah? big slap for proton and what is their react? anyone know?
sometime, i just feel its has pro and contra where in malaysia we can use any car as long as we want although that car were 50years old. they still legal remain on road unlike singapore or any country where although the imported car was cheap but they can live with that car only for 5 years. next years would be illegal for them to drive that powerful car on road.. when i ask Singaporean, what i conclude is they were paying car installment forever as they need a car.. pretty sad isnt it? so next time dont feel singapore is rich country where every time come to malaysia with their new sport car.. or feel jealous of them… because they paying for that forever. Plus their plat have 2 color where 1 you can drive car on day/night time and another one you can drive on night only… heheh…
Cheap car wad….dun be so high expectation la….haha…
my house has a 1998 proton iswara…that time the price is 40k… it din give major problem at all.. just normal wear n tear…like slow power window, central locking spoil, brake lamp burn, all cars will have tat problem. my friend own a 2010 honda city, within 6 months there is a short circuit in the car n he is unable to start the car. so many ppl own proton, so when u ask somebody, somebody’s proton wil be spoil.. if u calculate percentage, the precentage which proton car spoil will be the same as other major car manufacturer only. say around us got some 100 proton car owner, 10% wil spoil… wah ten proton car spoil ar…so many omg. there wil be ten honda car owner only among our friends, coz it is so expensive, 10% wil spoil… so only one car wil spoil. wah honda so good! like tat lor
Brother’s waja change so many time. End up wasting money and go to cheap taiwan parts. The handle cost rm8 only then spray my own. Fix in and 3 years already. Still good.
